End Polio Now Press Release.
The I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis and France Avenue in Edina will be lit in shades of red and yellow on October 24 to honor Rotary International's fight to end polio called End Polio Now.
Rotary International and the Rotary Clubs of District 5950 in the Minneapolis area and central Minnesota have been engaged in a 30-year campaign to eradicate polio worldwide. When Rotary launched its eradication effort in 1985, more than 350,000 children in 125 countries were stricken with polio every year. Since then, polio cases have dropped by 99% to 359 cases in 2014. As of the end of September, 44 cases of wild poliovirus had been reported in 2015 in two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Africa recently marked one year without wild polio.
Polio will be only the second disease after smallpox to be eradicated. The world is on the threshold of ending polio forever due to the efforts of Rotary and its partners, the World Health Organization, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF.
The Minneapolis City Council has declared October 24 as World Polio Day in Minneapolis. The I-35W Bridge will be lit in the End Polio Now branding colors of red and yellow that day to bring attention and awareness to the final push for polio eradication. Lights in the Southtdale area of France Avenue in Edina will also be lit in red and yellow on October 24.

Heart Safe Plymouth: We have trained 3,186 People and counting!
October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month!
Norm and Russ held a Heart Safe meeting on Thursday, October 22. Members Parish, Bartling, Beachler, Crenna, Weber, Juetten, Okerstrom and Carlson attended the meeting. Russ started the meeting by stating the original goals of the program: Train 10% of the City of Plymouth, about 7,000; Identify AED's in the City of Plymouth; Get AED's listed on the National Registry; and, Obtain the Heart Safe Communities Designation for Plymouth. He then provided a list of "where are we three years into the project?"
1) Training 3,186 in 125 trainings
2) Identified 125 AED's in the community
3) Dontated 6 AED's and responsible for placement of an additional 15+
4) Had one save we know of on September 2014 at St. Barnabas Church
5) Obtained the Heart Safe Communities designation for the City of Plymouth
6) Presented program at the District Conference
7) Presented the program to 10-12 Rotary Clubs and trained the memberships
8) Raised the visibility of Rotary through newspaper articles, cable TV, mass training, participation in outside of Rotary events, etc.
9) Speed dating event at Rotary District 5950 training conference September 2015.
Some of the ideas discussed moving forward:
1) Recruit a second training team; establish a plan to locate training locations
2) Are we targeting the right organizations? Should we do a mass postcard mailing to Plymouth businesses/organizations?
3) Reestablish a program to locate and document AED's in the community - using a map of the city with the AED locations shown.
4) Do more in our weekly meetings. Announcements, SCA survivor stories, etc.
5) Follow-up with the groups trained
PLEASE CONSIDER BEING PART OF THE HEART SAFE PROGRAM.
Club Visioning:
In the near future, President Juetten and Peter Bartling will be reaching out to members to invite them to a three to four hour club visioning session that will be facilitated by District 5950 representatives. This will be a great opportunity for the members to discuss how we can improve and continue to keep members engaged, engage those members that may not be fully engaged and to attract new members. This should be a great opportunity and the hope is that most, if not all members, can spare the time to participate.
Secretary - Club Administrator:
Murray Death has decided to resign from the club and the position of Secretary. Because of this we are looking for someone interested in becoming a member of the Board. President Juetten and President Elect Knight will be reaching out to members to gage interest. Certainly, if you have interest please reach out to either to discuss the position.
Quarterly Invoices:
New quarter invoices have been sent out. Please pay as soon as possible. Thank you.
New Members:
Bala Guntipalli and Lymari Santana were inducted at this meeting. Each will be given an opportunity to give a vocational in the near future.
Please take time to introduce yourselves to Bala and Lymari.
Remember the membership contest - 1 point for bringing a perspective member to a meeting, 5 points if that person joins and 3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting. Steve Beachler has 12 points, Glen Norton, Dwain Erickson and Steve Juetten each have 1 point.
