August 6, 2015 Meeting

Polio Update -  RI President Ravindran reported last week:  "We're delighted to report (today) Nigeria has passed one year with no new cases of the wild poliovirus."  Thank you to everyone for your part in this battle.

This Week's Program:
This week we are going to try something a little different.  Rather than a speaker we are going to get to know each other a little better one-on-one.  Everyone has heard of "speed dating" where people rotate from person to person to try and learn something about other people.  The concept will be the same for us .  Half the members will stay where they are seated and the others will move about the room every five minutes.  During each five minute period the hope is that everyone will be talking to a different person learning something about them:  Where they grew up; where they work; why did they choose to join Rotary; what do they enjoy doing outside of work and Rotary; etc. (this really is open to where ever the conversation goes).  Let's have some fun with this.

Tim Janssen, West Metro Rotaract President will be attending so let's show him a good time.

Last Week's Program:
The meeting began with an invocation by Peter Bartling followed by introductions (see guest list below) and the card game by Ben Rischall (no one won the card game so it moves onto next week), and trivia by Steve Juetten.  Then President Juetten made announcements starting with answers to the riddles and questions: 1) An Anchor; 2) A Window; and 3) Nothing.

We had three guests, other than our speakers:  Glen Norton brought Patrick Bannia who is considering membership.  Bala Guntipalli returned for a second visit, and Peter Bartling's Grandson Jack Bartling attended.

Remember the membership contest - 1 points for bringing a perspective member to  meeting, 5 points if that person joins and
3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting.  Steve Beachler and Glen Norton both now have 1 point.

President Juetten then announced that our exchange student will be arriving on the August 17th at 1:45pm and that Jason Cardwell is looking for Rotarians interested in going to the airport to welcome him (contact Jason).  Jason is also looking for a host family for the second and third periods of our students stay.  Lastly, the first host family needs a family to host Albert September 10th - 13th (again, please contact Jason).  See more information on the exchange student below.

President Juetten thanked those that have submitted quarterly payments and asked everyone else to continue to send in payments as quickly as possible.  He mentioned that we still need speakers for the August 20th and September 3rd meetings.

Carol Parrish provided a great overview of the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute ski service project that 0ur Club as sponsor, along with collaboration form the Rotary Clubs of Golden Valley, Lake Minnetonka, Excelsior, Edina and Minneapolis City of Lakes will be completing.  The five clubs combined on a grant application submitted to the District and on July 27, 2015 the District approved the applications.  The funds from the District, along with the contributions from the clubs, will provide $15,000 in needed safety equipment for the adaptive program.  Our service project is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at which time we will move existing equipment from a temporary location at Hyland Hills to a permanent storage facility there.  The equipment will need to be cleaned, organized and placed in a new facility being constructed by McGough Construction.  Steve Beachler, Woody Jewett and Brock Peterson are the three club members in charge of this service project. A MAJOR THANK YOU TO CAROL FOR HER WORK ON THIS!

Rotary Clubs Help Make Adaptive Winter Sports More Accessible

Jeff Wosje introduced our speakers this week.  The speakers were Pat Caldie and Scott Otto from Organizational Change Advisors, LLC.  They provided great insight on leadership and how change is necessary to improve organizations.  Here is the answer to the nine dots connected by four lines puzzle introduced by Pat.

Fundraiser
Jim Crenna continues to work on the fundraiser and will provide periodic updates to everyone.  The Parade is Saturday, September 26th this year.  Those that have secured sponsors in the past need to secure them again and let Jim know.  Further, we are in need of a grand price.  Our previous grand prize no long is available.  Lastly, Jim needs assistance in many areas, but immediately he needs someone to manage the small prices.  Please contact Jim if you have any questions or ideas.  Also, please thank Jim for all the work tha the does for the fundraiser!

Vice President/President Elect Request: Over the next several weeks I, along with the Board and Past Presidents, will be reaching out to a number of you to gauge your interest in becoming the Vice President/President Elect.  Please spend some time thinking about the possibility and contact me if you have questions and interest.  With the quality and experience of the current board and the number of engaged past presidents, there is no time like this year to start your Rotary leadership.

Meeting Survey:
The meeting survey is complete and the results will be presented at the meeting.

Crowne Plaza has come to the Club asking for an increase in the cost for a Thursday lunch that would increase the cost to a member to $21.  Because of this the information presented during the mini visioning session in July, a survey was distributed to the members in attendance (the survey will be e-mailed to all members soon).  The survey asked three questions: 1) Number of Thursday meetings per month (all or some lesser number); 2) Time of Meeting (lunch or breakfast; and 3) Location (stay at Crowne Plaza or look for a new location).

Heart Safe Plymouth:  We have trained over 2,902 People and counting!

ClubRunner Member Profiles:

Incoming Youth Exchange News:

The first Host Family for our inbound student Guan-Yu Chen coming this August from Taiwan has been secured.  Jason Cardwell and Jill Kohler are still seeking two more host families to accommodate his year with us.  Youth Exchange Officer Jason reports our incoming student is fluent in English.  Jason and Jill  have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service!  And please circulate this hosting opportunity to your friends and families in the Wayzata School District.  Anyone who has hosted in the past can relate what a wonderful experience it can be. It would be wonderful if a Plymouth Rotarian would step up to host!
