November 19, 2015

This Week's Program:
This week's speaker will be Dr. Pauling Boss, emeritus professor at the University of of Minnesota.  Dr. Boss is highly sought after world-wide, for her expertise in teaching clinicians how to work with individuals, and families whose loved ones are "ambiguously lost" from events such as the tsunami in Japan, an airliner that just disappears, dementia, or the abduction of a child.  Dr. Boss has written three books on on how to deal with the profound grieving which results from the "ambiguous loss" caused by Alzheimers Disease.  She and her husband currently reside in Minneapolis.  The link below is a StarTribune article on the subject and Dr. Ross.  Dr. Ross will be introduced by Eric Blank.

The November 19th Program (our last program):

The meeting started with the invocation by Carol Parrish filling in for Pam (thank you Carol).  This was followed by introductions by Jason Cardwell filling in for Steve Coley (thank you Jason).  Jason followed up the introductions with the card game where no one won.  This was followed by Jim Crenna, filling in for Jill Kohler (thank you Jim) with fines.

The answer to the riddles this week were 1) Female; 2) OWL; 3) Pun; 4) and Pupil.  Like always, if you want the first part of the riddles you will need to read the November 19, 2015 bulletin.

Our Guests this week were Mike Neeley, visiting Rotarian from New Brighton, La La Weiser, guest of Bruce Behm and Steve Solbrack, Rotarian from St. Louis Park and part of our speaking team today.  a speaker on Safe Water Plus Honduras.

Our Speakers were Bruce Behm and Steve Solbrack.  Bruce discussed the 2015/2016 annual giving campaign.  He outlined the Annual Fund, Polio Plus, Safe Water Plus and Rotary Club of Plymouth Foundation.  The presented goals are: $16,500 for the Annual Fund, $1,500 for Polio Plus and $4,000 for Safe Water Plus Honduras which totals $22,000 or $500 per member.  The captains this year are Virginia Antony, Jason Cardwell, Pat Knight, Glen Norton, Jeff Wosje and Bruce Behm.  If you have been contacted by your captain, you will soon.

Steve Solbrack then spent several minutes talking about Safe Water Plus Honduras.  Below is information received from Steve:
Brief Project History and Status Update
SafeWater Plus Honduras will bring safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to 16 communities in western Honduras.  Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the world, and half of the population in the targeted area does not have access to safe water.  The global grant project is a collaboration between the Santa Rosa de Copan Rotary Club, Rotary District 5950 and World Vision (WV).  Three Rotarians from District 5950 traveled to Santa Rosa de Copan in March 2013 to develop relationships with our collaborating partners, needs assessment and to evaluate sustainability.  The global grant application was approved by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and District 5950 in September 2013.  The total cost of the project is $800,000, with $400,000 from Rotary and a $400,000 match from World Vision.  Thirty two Rotary clubs have provided $118,000 of funds toward the project.

The project is about 50% completed and should be fully completed by spring or early summer of 2016.  A group of 15 people from District 5950 traveled to Honduras in late March 2014.  The group included 8 Rotarians from 5 Rotary clubs, 4 spouses and 3 teenage daughters.  We had a wonderful trip, and spending that time with the 3 teenage daughters, and hearing their reflections during the trip and again a few months later, really enriched the experience for all of us.  The Santa Rosa de Copan Rotarians and the World Vision Honduras staff have been amazing partners on this project.  I am very much looking forward to spending time with them again next spring.  Attached are a few photos from the past two trips, and a couple of photos from this year showing completed work.

Travel Opportunity
We are planning a trip to Honduras for April 3 to April 9, 2016.  This is a Sunday to Saturday, and there are several high schools that have spring break that week.  It would be awesome if we have some teenage or young adult children or grandchildren of Rotarians join us on this trip.  We will spend time with Rotarians from the Santa Rosa de Copan Rotary Club and employees from World Vision Honduras.  We will spend several days visiting communities and schools in Western Honduras that are included in this project.  We are planning on spending one night and one day at Copan Ruins the end of the week.  This is an opportunity to learn about another culture, be in relationship with our collaborating partners and see and hear first-hand the impact we can have on the lives of others.

There will be a meeting on Sunday December 6th at my home in Golden Valley.  We will gather at 6:30 pm for networking and social time.  The meeting will start at 7:00 pm and we will plan on being done around 8:00 pm.  All are welcome to stay after for networking and social time.  There will be appetizers, snacks, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages.  If you would like to attend the meeting email me to RSVP and then Steve will email you with more specific details including address.

We have room for up to 14 people on the trip.  Spouses, significant others and children/grandchildren over age 15 are very welcome to join the group.  There is also an optional opportunity to extend the trip beyond April 9th, either together or separately.  There were 5 of us that extended for 3 days at the end of the 2014 trip, and had a very nice time with a couple of days of outdoor adventures.  If you are interested in going on the trip but are unable to attend the meeting on December 6th feel free to email or call to express your interest and get more information.

It will be a few weeks before we know the cost of the trip, but here is some information for perspective.  World Vision will put together a package for us for Sunday to Saturday.  On the last trip in 2014 that package cost was $1,467 per person for dual occupancy and I think it was about $200 more for single occupancy.  The package included lodging; meals; ground transportation; water/snacks; SOS coverage; interpreter; WV trip leader’s international flight; and WV trip leader’s in country expense.  I just took a quick look at airfare online and it looks like it is currently around $1,000 to $1,100.  Bummer as my airfare in 2014 was only $600.  I am sure there are many more questions, and look forward to seeing a group of Rotarians on December 6th.

Consider making Rotary your organization of choice for annual giving.  Please contact Bruce for information.

Club Visioning:

The Club Visioning has occurred and the notes have been scribed by Carol Parrish.  President Juetten has been thinking about the best way to present the information to the club and will be rolling out the information soon.  For sure we will be discussing at the Club Assembly on January 7, 2016.  I look forward to working with everyone of you as we make the Plymouth Rotary even better.

Youth Exchange:

Let's all come up with ways to entertain Albert as the holiday season approaches!

At the next couple meetings we will be passing the hat for donations - money, gift cards and gifts - to put into a Holiday Sock that we will give Albert at our December 17th Holiday Meeting.

Jason and Jill  have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service!  Jason and Jill have finalized the second host family and working extremely hard on finding the third host family.  Please keep Albert and his need for a third host family in mind when talking to community members.

Holiday Meeting:

The December 17th meeting has been set aside for our holiday event.  At this point, it would be appreciated if a few members would step forward to help plan the event.  It doesn't have to be a big event, just something different to help bring members together to celebrate the holiday season.  Please send Steve Juetten an e-mail if you are interested.

Heart Safe Plymouth:  We have trained 3,208 People and counting!

Norm and Russ did it again.  They were at the Litchfield Rotary November 24th where they trained 18 members.  This was the 13th Rotary Club that they have trained.  Thank you Norm and Russ for all the work you do with this great service project.

Members - please think about how you can be part of this great program.

Secretary - Club Administrator:

We are in need of a Secretary.   President Juetten and President Elect Knight will be reaching out to members to gage interest.  Certainly, if you have interest please reach out to either to discuss the position.

Greater Minneapolis IGNITE 2016 Leadership & Innovation Conference:

The Six Rotary Clubs in Area 12 (Plymouth, Wayzata, Lake MTKA/Excelsior, Orono, Excelsior and Mound/West Tonka), under the guidance of Area Assistant Governor Jeff Wosje, are planning a leadership conference and subsequent series for 2016.  The goal is to host a leadership and innovation conference with 300 attendees to serve our local business communities while raising awareness of Rotary.  Currently most people within our communities primarily know about Rotary through our fundraisers, because that is what we promote - golf outings, ball drops, brewfests, etc.  However what we do is so much more than that that.  Rotary is about leadership to solve the issues affecting our communities and our world (i.e. Polio Plus).  By hosting the conference we will position Rotary as more than just a service club, but a group of dedicated business leaders working to improve their leadership and innovation skills while serving the greater community.  The hoped for result is that the exposure will also increase our membership.  This will be aided by the fact we can be promoting our corporate membership at the same time as promoting our conference.  After the initial conference, we would host a free monthly speaker series starting Friday, February 26, 2016.  This series would feature just 1-2 speakers and be held at the Ridgedale Library.  This would give our Rotary clubs continual exposure and offer great training.

The lead person from each club will be the President Elect.  In our case that is Pat Knight.  However, he cannot possibly do it by himself.  Pat and I have agreed to coordinate the location and registration.  Determining the location will be done by Pat and me.   The registration - online, offline (sales within each club), day of event and coordinate of conference packets and name tags - will need a committee of Plymouth members.  Pat will be reaching out to the members to establish the committee within the next week.

Rotary Grant Committee:

The Grant Committee is accepting grant applications which will be considered soon.  Plymouth Rotarians must sponsor each application.  First half grants will be awarded in late November or early December.  Second half grants will be awarded in early Spring, 2016.  Please review the Grant Policy and find the Grant Application Form at  http://rotaryplymouth.org/Page/grants .  The number of Grants to be made is dependent on the amount of funds available which will be known soon.  Contact Past President Steve Beachler if you have questions.

Quarterly Invoices:

Thank you to everyone that has paid the recently distributed invoices.

New Members:
Remember the membership contest - 1 point for bringing a perspective member to a meeting, 5 points if that person joins and 3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting.  Steve Beachler has 12 points, Steve Juetten has 2 points and Glen Norton and Dwain Erickson each have 1 point.
