July 30, 2015 Meeting

Polio Update -  RI President Ravindran reported this week:  "We're delighted to report (today) Nigeria has passed one year with no new cases of the wild poliovirus."  Thank you to everyone for your part in this battle.

This Week's Program:
Jeff Wosje will be introducing our speakers this week.  The speakers are Pat Caldie and Scott Otto from Organizational Change Advisors, LLC.  They will be talking about what leadership is with a focus on change and will weave in the importance of communications to create a positive work environment to successfully lead others through changes.

Last Week's Program:
The meeting began with an invocation by Peter Bartling followed by introductions (see guest list below) and the card game by Ben Rischall (no one won the card game so it moves onto next week), and trivia by Bob Wittman (thank you for filling in).  Then President Juetten made announcements starting with answers to the riddles and questions: 1) Corn on the Cob; 2) The letter "M"; and 3) A Teapot.

We had five guests, other than our speakers:  Felipe (past exchange student back for a visit); Felipe's sister; a close friend of Felipe; Dick Parrish; and Bala Guntipalli.  Bala was visiting as a guest of Steve Beachler and is a prospective member.  Bala recently moved to Minnesota with is wife who is a doctor at the Maple Grove Hospital and two young children.  Bala works for Singular Technology Group LLC.  Please make time to talk to him when he visits again.

Remember the membership contest - 1 points for bringing a perspective member to  meeting, 5 points if that person joins and
3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting.  Steve Beachler has started the competition with 1 point!

President Juetten then announced that our exchange student will be arriving on the August 17th at 1:45pm and that Jason Cardwell is looking for Rotarians interested in going to the airport to welcome him (contact Jason).  Jason is also looking for a host family for the second and third periods of our students stay.  Lastly, the first host family needs a family to host Albert September 10th - 13th (again, please contact Jason).

President Juetten announced that everyone should have received the quarterly invoice earlier last week and it would be appreciated if everyone pay as quickly as possible.  He then mentioned that we still need speakers for the August 13th and August 20th meetings.

After announcements, Carol Parrish provided a wonderful introduction to our speakers, Meghan Ihlenfeld and Dick Mosmon.  Meghan is the Program Coordinator in the Sports and Recreation Department at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute.  Dick is a City of Lake's Rotarian but he also has been a ski instructor for the Ski program and Courage Kenny for many years.  Meghan discussed how Courage Kenny has taught thousands of people with physical disabilities and visual impairments to ski and snow board for the past 40 years.  They teach about 200 lessons per week during the season.  They train more than 400 volunteers each year and host several events.  Below is a short video about the program:

Our Club as sponsor, along with collaboration form the Rotary Clubs of Golden Valley, Lake Minnetonka, Excelsior, Edina and Minneapolis City of Lakes has submitted a District grant application for consideration at their July 27th meeting.  If approved, the club contributions along with the District grant will provide in excess of $13,000 in needed safety equipment for the adaptive program.  Our service project is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at which time we will move existing equipment from a temporary location at Hyland Hills to a permanent storage facility there.  The equipment will need to be cleaned, organized and placed in a new facility being constructed by McGough Construction.  Steve Beachler, Woody Jewett and Brock Peterson are the three club members in charge of this service project. A MAJOR THANK YOU TO CAROL FOR HER WORK ON THIS!

Vice President/President Elect Request: Over the next several weeks I, along with the Board and Past Presidents, will be re out to a number of you to gauge your interest in becoming the Vice President/President Elect.  Please spend some time thinking about the possibility and contact me if you have questions and interest.  With the quality and experience of the current board and the number of engaged past presidents, there is no time like this year to start your Rotary leadership.

Meeting Survey:
There is still time to submit your survey.  The Board will discussing the survey results at the July 28th Board meeting.

Crowne Plaza has come to the Club asking for an increase in the cost for a Thursday lunch that would increase the cost to a member to $21.  Because of this the information presented during the mini visioning session in July, a survey was distributed to the members in attendance (the survey will be e-mailed to all members soon).  The survey asked three questions: 1) Number of Thursday meetings per month (all or some lesser number); 2) Time of Meeting (lunch or breakfast; and 3) Location (stay at Crowne Plaza or look for a new location).

Heart Safe Plymouth:  We have trained over 2,902 People and counting!

Incoming Youth Exchange News:

The first Host Family for our inbound student Guan-Yu Chen coming this August from Taiwan has been secured.  Jason Cardwell and Jill Kohler are still seeking two more host families to accommodate his year with us.  Youth Exchange Officer Jason reports our incoming student is fluent in English.  Jason and Jill  have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service!  And please circulate this hosting opportunity to your friends and families in the Wayzata School District.  Anyone who has hosted in the past can relate what a wonderful experience it can be. It would be wonderful if a Plymouth Rotarian would step up to host!

Riddles/Questions

What do you throw out when you want to use it and take in when you don't want to use it?

What invention lets you look right threw a wall?

It's more powerful than God.  It's more evil than the devil.  The poor have it.  The rich need it.  If you eat it, you'll die.  What am I?
