September 10, 2015 Meeting

This Week's Program:
This week we will hear from Beth Bailey, the Director of Mediation Services.  Beth will discuss how Mediation Services works and the successes that have occurred through mediation.

Last Week's Program:
The meeting began with an invocation by Rich Manthe (thank you Rich for filling in) followed by the card game by Steve Beachler (no winner this week), and trivia by Murray Death (thank you Murray for filling in).

Our guests this week were our speakers Neal Krenz and Molly Black, Phyllis Vrba (past member), Tom Yuzen (visiting Rotarian from California - formally from Minnesota), Bala Guntipalli (prospective member) and Lamari Santana (Lamari has submitted her application for membership).

Remember the membership contest - 1 point for bringing a perspective member to a meeting, 5 points if that person joins and 3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting.  Steve Beachler has 2 points, Glen Norton and Steve Juetten each have 1 point.

President Juetten then read the riddles: 1) Credit or debt.  Debt is a problem in many people's lives, but in order to go to school or make a large purchase, it can be useful.  As your debt grows older, its more unpleasant than useful.  2) String.  A string ties objects together.  You wear a ring. A string hurts.  According to the Bible, Adam and Eve committed a sin.  And you sing with your mouth.  3)  Arlington National Cemetery, the burial place of soldiers from the United States Civil War.  It also houses the tomb of the unknown soldiers.  General Robert E. Lee's mansion once stood on the land that is now occupied by the cemetery.  And on Memorial Day in the U.S., we honor all those who died while serving their country.  You will need to read last weeks bulletin to see the Riddle.

The meeting then was turned over to member Peter Bartling to introduce Neal Krenz and Molly Black.  Neal and Molly both served in Iraq for the United States.  They have returned and are now giving back through the work they are doing for the Brooklyn Park VET Center at 7001 78th Avenue N, suite 300.  (763) 503-2220.  The VET Center provides readjustment Counseling.  Readjustment Counseling is a wide range of psycho social services offered to eligible Veterans and their families in the effort to make a successful transition from military to civilian life.  They include:  Individual and group counseling for Veterans and their families; Family counseling for military related issues; Bereavement counseling for families who experience an active duty death; Military sexual trauma counseling and referral; Outreach and education including PDHRA, Community events; Substance abuse assessment and referral; Employment assessment & referral; VBA benefits explanation and referral; and Screening & referral for medical issues including TBI, depression, etc.

Some of the programs the Vet Center provides service members:  Vietnam/Combat Veteran Support Group; Guitars for Vets; Buffalo Soldiers Group; Golf Wellness Group; Women Veteran Support Group; Bowling Wellness Group; LCBTQ Wellness Group; Veterans Yoga Class; Substance Recovery Group; Mediation Group; Spousal Support Group, etc.

Veterans Serving Veterans - To serve those who have served for us, to protect those who protected us, to honor those who sacrificed for us, to keep the promise we gave to them, when they promised to give to us."

Meeting Survey:
The results of the survey, recent action by the Board of Directors based on the survey and the next steps.

Results of the Survey:
1)  How many meetings per month?  9 members said continue meeting every Thursday, 18 members said change to three meetings per month and 6 members suggested something different.  Based on this the Board approved moving to three meetings starting in October (1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays).  Along with this, on some of the "off" Thursdays - 4th and 5th (if a month has five) - we will plan some after work activities.

2)  Meeting time (Noon or morning)?  19 members said continue at Noon and 15 members said change to a morning time (7 or 7:30 start).  Based on this the Board approved staying a Noon club.

3)  Location (stay and Crowne Plaza or look at other options)?  11 members said stay at Crowne Plaza and 25 members said let's look for a new less expensive location.  Based on this, a "committee" of volunteer members will be spending the next couple of weeks looking into options.  Thank you to those members that have volunteered: Peter Bartling, Jim Bird, Dwain Erickson, Ben Rischall, Sharon Sund, Jeff Wosje, Murray Death, Ricardo Ortizcazarin and James Williams.  Updates will be provided at meetings and in future bulletins and at future meetings.

The Board and the volunteer committee continues to work on finalizing a location.  I expect to present the results of the location search at this meeting.

Is your photo missing??

Youth Exchange News:

Guan-Yu Chen (Albert) is here!  He attended our meeting two weeks ago and is settling in with his new family.  Jason and Jill  have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service!  And please circulate this hosting opportunity to your friends and families in the Wayzata School District.  We continue to look for host families for Albert.  Anyone who has hosted in the past can relate what a wonderful experience it can be. It would be wonderful if a Plymouth Rotarian would step up to host!

IOCP is Looking for volunteers:

IOCP has a couple of upcoming needs for Rotary volunteers.  One is an immediate one-time opportunity unpacking/labeling Chrome Books at Wayzata Central Middle School for the CONECT homework clubs.  This opportunity would be for five people for about 1 1/2 hours sometime late in the wak of Labor Day (the date and time will be announced soon).  Two is the need for Homework Help volunteers who work with kids once a week starting in October and going through the school year (more information coming soon).  If you are interested in either, please contact Jill Kohler.

Riddles/Questions

1) It's so strong, it does not break, It's so powerful, it penetrates a lake, Sometimes it's weak as a twig left out in the sun, It's so wonderful it gives us the power to have fun. What is it?

2)  What tastes better than it smells?

3)  What's orange and sounds like parrot?
