July 23, 2015 Meeting

This Week's Program:
This week we have the opportunity to hear from Megan Ihlenfeld, Program Coordinator, Sports & Recreation Department, Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute and Rhonda Rae, PSIA (Professional Ski Instructor Association) Lead Instructor, Level I Adaptive.  Courage Kenny Ski & Snowboard Program for the past 40 years has taught thousands of people with physical disabilities and visual impairments to ski and snowboard.  They teach about 200 lessons per week during the season, train more than 400 volunteers each year, as well as host a series of special events.

Our club as sponsor, along with collaboration from the Rotary clubs of Golden Valley, Lake Minnetonka-Excelsior and Minneapolis City of Lakes has submitted a District grant application for consideration at their July 27 meeting.  If approved, the club contributions along with the District grant will provide in excess of $13K in needed safety and ski equipment for the adaptive program.  Our service project is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at which time we will move existing equipment from a temporary location at Hyland Hills to a permanent storage facility there.  The equipment will need to be cleaned, organized and placed in a new facility being constructed by McGough Construction.  Steve Beachler, Woody Jewett and Brock Peterson are the three club members in charge of this service project.

Past Exchange Student Felipe will be visiting this week with his sister and a friend.

Last Week's Program:
The meeting began with an invocation by Steve Beachler (thank you for filling in) followed by introductions and the card game by Ben Rischall, and trivia by Jim Crenna (thank you for filling in).  Then President Juetten made announcements starting with answers to the riddles and questions: 1) Letter X; 2) Coffin; and 3) Which came first the chicken or the egg?

President Juetten then announced that our exchange student will be arriving on the 17th (of August not July) at 1:45pm and that Jason Cardwell is looking for Rotarians interested in going to the airport to welcome him (contact Jason).  Jason is also looking for a host family for the second and third periods of our students stay.  Lastly, the first host family needs a family to host Albert September 10th - 13th (again, please contact Jason).

President Juetten announced that everyone should have received the quarterly invoice earlier in the week and it would appreciated that everyone pay as quickly as possible.

The club had the great privilege of hearing Bloomington Rotarian Sandhya Gupta discuss the educational work that she and her husband have been doing in India.  The link below is a 3 1/2 minute video providing an overview.  Sandhya's work is a clear example of Being a Gift to the World.

Vice President/President Elect Request: Over the next several weeks I, along with the Board and Past Presidents, will be re out to a number of you to gauge your interest in becoming the Vice President/President Elect.  Please spend some time thinking about the possibility and contact me if you have questions and interest.  With the quality and experience of the current board and the number of engaged past presidents, there is no time like this year to start your Rotary leadership.

Meeting Survey:
Crowne Plaza has come to the Club asking for an increase in the cost for a Thursday lunch that would increase the cost to a member to $21.  Because of this the information presented during the mini visioning session in July, a survey was distributed to the members in attendance (the survey will be e-mailed to all members soon).  The survey asked three questions: 1) Number of Thursday meetings per month (all or some lesser number); 2) Time of Meeting (lunch or breakfast; and 3) Location (stay at Crowne Plaza or look for a new location).  The answers are asked to be returned by July 23 so they can be tabulated and decisions made on how to move forward.

ClubRunner Member Profiles:

Preview your member profile on the ClubRunner website for accuracy and update any missing data. Contact President Steve Juetten or the Secretary/Club Administrator Murray Death with any questions you may have.  To assist, Dwain Erickson and Diane Moyer can shoot smart phone photographs of members whose photos are missing in the Club Membership roster. Is your photo missing??

Incoming Youth Exchange News:

The first Host Family for our inbound student Guan-Yu Chen coming this August from Taiwan has been secured.  Jason Cardwell and Jill Kohler are still seeking two more host families to accommodate his year with us.  Youth Exchange Officer Jason reports our incoming student is fluent in English.  Jason and Jill  have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service!  And please circulate this hosting opportunity to your friends and families in the Wayzata School District.  Anyone who has hosted in the past can relate what a wonderful experience it can be. It would be wonderful if a Plymouth Rotarian would step up to host!

Riddles/Questions

Throw away the outside and cook the inside, then eat the outside and throw away the inside. What is it?

What occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in a thousand years?

What starts with the letter "t", is filled with "t" and ends in "t"?
