This Week's Program:

This week we will hear from Bruce Behm regarding our annual giving campaign.  Bruce will discuss how our contributions are used by Rotary International, what options available to members, and how best to make donations.  Bruce will also introduce the campaign captains that will assist him in recording contributions.  Thank you for everyone that has given in the past.  Thank you Bruce for being part of the Board and taking on this important responsibility.

Last Week's Program:

The meeting started with the invocation by Carol Parrish filling in for Pam Oesterreich (thank you Carol).  This was followed by introductions by Steve Coley (our guests are mentioned below).  Steve followed up the introductions with the card game, which was won by Don Weber.  This was followed by Jim Crenna, filling in for Jill Kohler (thank you Jim) with trivia.

The answer to the riddles this week were 1) A stamp; At the bottom; Nice belt; and Because they are still alive (as always you will need to read last weeks bulletin to see the riddles themselves).

Our Guests this week were Tom R, friend and neighbor of Diane Moyer and Grace, daughter of Ricardo Ortizcazarin

Our speaker was Laura Babcock.  Dr. Babcock joined the University of Minnesota Technical Assistance Program (MnTAP) as the director in 2011, bringing leadership and new technical expertise to the program. She is responsible for developing sustainable programs to meet business’ needs, pursuing funding opportunities for program activities, collaborating with multiple in-state and national partner organizations, managing staff, and providing technical assistance to businesses in Minnesota.  Dr. Babcock's areas of technical expertise include improving production quality of polylactic acid (PLA), lowering process costs of manufacturing operations, and contributing to the discovery of various polymer technologies. She has co-authored numerous patents and publications in these areas. Additionally, Laura has experience within the bio-plastics industry, working for NatureWorks, LLC, a global producer of biodegradable plastic.  You can find more information on the program by clicking on the link below.

Club Visioning:

The Club Visioning session will be this coming Monday, November 16th from 5:10 to no later than 9:00 p.m.  It will be held at the City of Plymouth Public Safety Training room.  Although registration is closed, if someone hasn't responded to the e-mail meeting request they can still attend, however, you will not have a meal.  A short update will be made at an upcoming meeting and a more detailed update will be provided in a future bulletin.  A big thank you to Peter Bartling for his work on coordinating this even.

Youth Exchange:

Let's all come up with ways to entertain Albert as the holiday season approaches!

At the next couple meetings we will be passing the hat for donations - money, gift cards and gifts - to put into a Holiday Sock that we will give Albert at our December 17th Holiday Meeting.

Jason and Jill  have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service!  Jason and Jill have finalized the second host family and working extremely hard on finding the third host family.  Please keep Albert and his need for a third host family in mind when talking to community members.

Holiday Meeting:

The December 17th meeting has been set aside for our holiday event.  At this point, it would be appreciated if a few members would step forward to help plan the event.  It doesn't have to be a big event, just something different to help bring members together to celebrate the holiday season.  Please send Steve Juetten an e-mail if you are interested.

November is Rotary Foundation Month:

This month you will receive information on the Rotary Foundation and ways that you can give back.  Foundation Board member Behm has been talking to Foundation Captains and you should hear from the Captains in the near future.  Further, at the November 19th meeting information will be presented on the Foundation and how you could give and what the money goes to and how we get money back to help us fund local service projects.

Heart Safe Plymouth:  We have trained 3,180 People and counting!

On October 22, members of the club met with Norm Okerstrom and Russ Carlson to discuss the Heart Safe Program.  The purpose was to review where the program started, what has been accomplished and what can be done to move the program to greater heights.  More information will be presented in the near future.

PLEASE CONSIDER BEING PART OF THE HEART SAFE PROGRAM.

The next event is this coming Tuesday, November 17 at the Plymouth Library.  The training starts at 7pm.  Pre-registration is required.  Contact Russ or Norm if you are interested in attending.

Secretary - Club Administrator:

We are in need of a Secretary.   President Juetten and President Elect Knight will be reaching out to members to gage interest.  Certainly, if you have interest please reach out to either to discuss the position.

Greater Minneapolis IGNITE 2016 Leadership & Innovation Conference:

The Six Rotary Clubs in Area 12 (Plymouth, Wayzata, Lake MTKA/Excelsior, Orono, Excelsior and Mound/West Tonka), under the guidance of Area Assistant Governor Jeff Wosje, are planning a leadership conference and subsequent series for 2016.  The goal is to host a leadership and innovation conference with 300 attendees to serve our local business communities while raising awareness of Rotary.  Currently most people within our communities primarily know about Rotary through our fundraisers, because that is what we promote - golf outings, ball drops, brewfests, etc.  However what we do is so much more than that that.  Rotary is about leadership to solve the issues affecting our communities and our world (i.e. Polio Plus).  By hosting the conference we will position Rotary as more than just a service club, but a group of dedicated business leaders working to improve their leadership and innovation skills while serving the greater community.  The hoped for result is that the exposure will also increase our membership.  This will be aided by the fact we can be promoting our corporate membership at the same time as promoting our conference.  After the initial conference, we would host a free monthly speaker series starting Friday, February 26, 2016.  This series would feature just 1-2 speakers and be held at the Ridgedale Library.  This would give our Rotary clubs continual exposure and offer great training.

The lead person from each club will be the President Elect.  In our case that is Pat Knight.  However, he cannot possibly do it by himself.  Pat and I have agreed to coordinate the location and registration.  Determining the location will be done by Pat and me.   The registration - online, offline (sales within each club), day of event and coordinate of conference packets and name tags - will need a committee of Plymouth members.  Pat will be reaching out to the members to establish the committee within the next week.

Rotary Grant Committee:

The Grant Committee is accepting grant applications which will be considered soon.  Plymouth Rotarians must sponsor each application.  First half grants will be awarded in late November or early December.  Second half grants will be awarded in early Spring, 2016.  Please review the Grant Policy and find the Grant Application Form at  http://rotaryplymouth.org/Page/grants .  The number of Grants to be made is dependent on the amount of funds available which will be known soon.  Contact Past President Steve Beachler if you have questions.

Quarterly Invoices:

Thank you to everyone that has paid the recently distributed invoices.

New Members:
Remember the membership contest - 1 point for bringing a perspective member to a meeting, 5 points if that person joins and 3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting.  Steve Beachler has 12 points, Steve Juetten has 2 points and Glen Norton and Dwain Erickson each have 1 point.

Riddles

1)  Two boxers are in a match scheduled for 12 rounds.  (Pure boxing only - no kicking, UFC takedowns, or anything else).  One of the boxers gets knocked out after only six rounds, yet no man throws a punch.  How is this possible?

2)  My first is in ocean but never in sea. My second’s in wasp but never in bee. My third is in glider and also in flight. My whole is a creature that comes out at night.

3)  Three little letters. A paradox to some. The worse that it is, the better it becomes.

4)  Different lights do make me strange, thus into different sizes I will change.

The 4-Way Test:  Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
