Membership Recruitment:
At the December 12, 2019, Board meeting the Board had a lengthy discussion on membership and the need to engage the current membership in recruiting new members.  Based on this discussion, the Board approved a new program:  If a current member recruits a new member and that member signs on for a full pay membership the current member will receive a one quarter waiver on dues.  The definition of a full pay member is a member that pays dues and meals on a quarterly basis, not pay-as-you go.    If you have questions, please ask either James or Peter.

Mentoring (One-on-One meetings):

We are now moving into the third period of calls we all agreed to make between members of the Club. You may recall we scheduled the calls between Veteran members (as call initiator) to meet with newer club members.  We asked each of you to commit to making contact over a 60 day period for a business visit, lunch meeting, or coffee meeting, etc. between you and the club member we asked you to contact.  You should be looking at the Jan.-Feb. 2020 time frame during which we’d like you to make that contact.

Please access the current assignment spreadsheet by logging into the Club’s web page on Club Runner.  (Click Here)  Click on the Member Log in tab; once your browser shows ‘Member Area’ you’re in.  You can now scroll down to the “Club Documents” page, then scroll down further to the page titled ‘One to One’ meetings.  The list has been updated for membership changes eliminating names of members who have resigned, and adding new members who have joined us.

You are on your honor to make these calls.  Our Club leadership would like to know if the calls are being made, so I would ask that you drop me an email letting me know when you have met your commitment.  You have a 60-day time frame to make the contact.  The content of your contact can be confidential; the only time we would like some feedback is if there are issues which need to be forwarded to Club leadership, other wise we hope you can answer any questions raised during the call, and to reinforce what it means to be a Rotarian.

In the last Nov-Dec period we only received notice of less that 10 calls that had been made.  WE CAN DO BETTER!  If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  We sincerely want this effort to bring about enhanced relationships between ALL Plymouth Rotarians.

Message from Jeff Pearson (and Abby) on Special Olympics:

Dear Rotary Friends:

Thanks for welcoming me to your meeting yesterday!  I loved greeting those of you who have been my friends for years and meeting others that I had not met until yesterday!

Just to let you know, Abby Pearson is, once again, plunging into the cold water of Riley Lake in Eden Prairie on March 7 for the 12th year!  And once again, she is asking for donations from her friends at the Plymouth Rotary.  For those of you who don't know Abby, she was kind of raised in the Rotary for the twelve years I was a member. She participated in the Duck Parades, in Adopt A Highway, Fire & Ice, and other fun things that we do at Rotary.  Abby has spoken at the Rotary at luncheons and has brought the President of Special Olympics Minnesota as a guest speaker.  Honestly, speaking at a Rotary meeting is something she has truly loved!

Thank you to all of you for supporting Abby in her Polar Plunge each year!  The Rotary members are major contributors to her cause every year, which is to help Special Olympics Minnesota support all 8,000 athletes who compete every week.  Abby participates in Track & Field, PolyHockey, Swimming, Powerlifting, and Bowling.

For those of you who know Abby, she is still working at the Special Olympics MN state office, 8 years now.  This past year she moved from being a Receptionist, to being a Program Assistant in the Program Department, with her own desk and everything!  She does varied tasks; coding invoice receipts, emailing coaches across the state to have them update their Level 1 & 2 status, emailing coaches to update athlete medical forms and working with staff at the actual meets.  More interesting and challenging work for sure!  She is also working two to three days a week for Isadore Nut Company, packaging and selling their healthy and organic gourmet nut mixes.

Thanks for your continued generous support of Special Olympics and Abby!  See the link below to donate to her 2020 Plunge.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Sincerely,
Jeff Pearson (for Abby)

Rotary and Toastmasters:
Dear Rotarian,

I am excited to share some good news: Rotary International and Toastmasters International are working together to provide our members with even more opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Toastmasters International is a global nonprofit organization with more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Its members attend club meetings where they give speeches, evaluate the speeches of others, and perform other club duties, with the goal of ultimately becoming more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders. Our organizations are complementary in many ways, but we are each unique in what we offer our members.

I hope you will join us in supporting this alliance in your community. You can start by learning more about Toastmasters, exploring its resources and public speaking tips, or visiting a local Toastmasters club. Although the structure of club meetings is consistent, Toastmaster clubs are similar to Rotary clubs in that they each have their own personality. If you do not have a club in your area, you can watch a video to learn what happens at a Toastmasters meeting.

You can also invite members of Toastmasters to visit your club and learn more about Rotary. If you have a Toastmasters club in your area, consider meeting with its members to explore opportunities to collaborate or inviting a member of Toastmasters to participate in a service activity or speak at your club.

Toastmasters will create a leadership development program for Rotarians and Rotaractors. A structured, robust leadership and communication curriculum can help members develop practical skills that will serve them not only in Rotary leadership roles, but in their professional and personal lives as well. Effective leadership skills can strengthen our clubs and increase our impact. We will provide updates about this program when we have more details.

Many of us joined Rotary to make a difference and connect with others in our communities. By working with Toastmasters, our members can discover new ways to network and learn from others, while finding even more value in their Rotary membership experience.

Learn more by reviewing these frequently asked questions. You can also send your questions and your stories about local collaboration efforts to toastmastersalliance@rotary.org.

Friends of Orono Rotary,

Orono Rotary is sponsoring a sew-a-thon to make and assemble feminine hygiene kits for the non-profit organization Days for Girls International.

The purpose of these kits is to provide protection to girls so they can attend school and have a more dignified life. These kits can last 3 years with proper cleaning.  To give a girl 3 more years of schooling will help break the poverty cycle and is instrumental for positive social change in families and in the world. More info at www.daysforgirls.org
You don’t need sewing experience! Tasks include sewing flannel liners, waterproof shields and bags, turning fabric and ironing, tracing patterns on fabric, cutting fabric, stringing bags, and putting snaps on the shields. Food and drink provided.  Stay as long as you like.

Message from District Retention Russ:

The Rotary year reached the halfway point at the end of December, and if your club hasn't done so yet, it's time to push The Rotary Foundation fundraising into high gear.  What we do this Rotary year will impact our project activity at home and around the world, including specifically what our district Rotarians will have available for matching grants 3 years from now.

Last Rotary year, our district Rotarians gave $271 per capita.  Even though the per capita amount was down a bit from the previous two years, that is still an outstanding number.  We hope to match or exceed that number this year, but it will take encouragement by club leaders to get there.  Here's what we ask of you as your club's leaders:

- Check your progress mid-year.  If you don’t know how to do that on-line, contact Jim Nelson (rotary5950jim@gmail.com, or 612-889-7309), our district TRF fundraising chair, and he can get the information for you, including your club’s history for the past 4 years.  Compare what your members have contributed this year so far to what they have contributed in the prior year to date, and to your club’s TRF goal.  Communicate the results so far to your club members and remind them of how important it is that EVERY ROTARIAN supports The Rotary Foundation EVERY YEAR.

- Have a program, within the next two months, devoted to The Rotary Foundation and why each member should give generously to the Foundation.  If you need a speaker for the program, or materials for your own program, again let Jim know and he can help either provide a speaker or materials.

- Ask your club members to PLEDGE a contribution to be PAID by June 15.  Jim sent to all presidents and Foundation chairs in November a “SUGGESTED ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN.”  If you need another copy of this document, please ask Jim.

- Separately from the annual fund drive, we ask CLUBS to contribute $1500 or more specifically dedicated to PolioPlus.  Many of our clubs have presented programs on polio eradication by our polio chair Tim Mulcrone.  Tim is always happy to come to your club to update your members on our polio eradication efforts.

Thank you for your service this year, and please feel free to contact me or Jim if you have any questions or concerns.  Our district has consistently been a leader in both generosity to the Foundation and use of those funds to achieve impactful projects here and around the world.  Let’s keep up that tradition again this year.

Yours in Rotary service,

Retention Russ
